Whilst voyaging from left to right across southern France we went to visit the Camargue. We didn't know what was there, but we were psyched to find out.
On arriving in this famed natural reserve (via free ferry!) we found ourselves amongst a battle formation of shiny campervans, on the frontier of a dull beach on which swimming is prohibited. Parking cars in the camper area is prohibited. Parking campers in the car area is prohibited. Not paying 12€ to sleep is prohibited. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a town where spontaneity is prohibited. On the other hand, the last three world sailing speed records were set here, and Bobbie Dylan wrote "One more cup of coffee" on a visit to the Roma Festival held in 1975. So for some, not all bad. For us, a bit shitty... We were not psyched. We drove onwards.
We continued driving along the lagoon, and YEWWW!! It was beautiful. And full of flamingos! This was something of a surprise to us, but apparently they live there quite happily. We watched fl'ingos feeding in the sunset and flying silhouetted against the moon; we fell asleep and woke up to their gentle nasal honking. Our sleep-spot was like a zoo window, but way better because they were wild and going about their own business. We went for a long walk in the morning along some of the sea walls and saw...more fl'ingos! Totally psyched.
There are actually more pretty awesome creatures about, other than just flamingos. There are cool black horny cows, the Camargue cattle, which are ancient. They are recorded as far back as Roman times, and thought by some to be descended from aurochs, massive prehistoric bovine that could weigh up to a tonne and a half. They are dogged by white cattle egrets and live semi-wild alongside Camargue horses. These are born black or brown and gradually turn white as they mature and are another very old breed. There is also a particularly blood-thirsty type of mosquito that are famed for their malignancy and got a good taste of Sam when he changed his trousers. Twelve bites, less than two minutes outside. Unequivocally un-psyched!
Camargue experience as a whole... Maximum psychage! YEEEWWWW!
Camargue flamingos flying past the morning sun and the view from our bedroom.
